Ham Radio for the growing minds!

Faculty of Applied Sciences, Wayamba University of Sri Lanka recently hosted a fruitful event to bring Science and Technology to the School Level. A Workshop and Exhibition exclusively for the GCE Advanced Level Physical Science Students in North Western Province was held on 11th October 2017.

All Departments in the Faculty,

  • Dept. of Computing & Information Systems
  • Dept. of Electronics
  • Dept. of Engineering Technology
  • Dept. of Industrial Management
  • Dept. of Mathematical Sciences
  • Dept. of Nano-Sciences Technology

had their own exhibition stalls with hundreds of exhibits. More than 300 schoolchildren from all corners of the NWP visited the exhibition with ardent enthusiasm.

4S6TMP-Tharanga, the writer also conducted an exhibition stall having the idea of giving the younger minds a glimpse of “Amateur Radio” using the limited equipment he possessed. The students were astounded to witness the sundry tools used in Ham Radio. There, 4S6TMP was careful enough not to overdose them with intricate theories, but to let them see for themselves how fast and easy Ham Radio is when it comes to emergency situations. The students were curious to know how Ham Radio played its role during the Tsunami and recent floods at Rathnapura.

Furthermore, he explained to the visitors how interesting is Ham Radio as a hobby for Tech-Geeks like them adding ample examples borrowed from the great 4S7 OM fraternity. JOTA, Fox-Hunts, and Light House Expeditions also secured their spots in his brief explanation.

4S6TMP operated only on 2m using a quick-homebrewed 4 element Yagi and his Kenwood TR7950. 4S7PK-Pathme and 4S5CNH-Nalin had QSOs making the demonstration more interesting.

Explaining everything is not merely enough if nobody knows how to get on board. The writer gave them the instructions on how to apply for the Radio Amateur License, directing them to the RSSL website for more information.
