Obituary 4S7DJ Jayantha

It is with profound sadness that we have to inform our membership of the passing away of Dr. D. D.Jayantha Nanayakkara 4S7DJ around 4.30 PM. on Sunday the 15th of December in Nuwara Eliya while taking a short break from his heavy medical practice.  Jayatha and Nihal 4S7NS were in Nuwara Eliya for a few days on a photographic expedition as wild-life lovers and also checking out VHF signals via the Nuwara Eliya repeater.

This news comes as a terrible shock to all of us as Jayantha was a very active radio amateur on HF and VHF and it is only last month that we all enjoyed his lively company.  Back home he was all praise for the outing and was looking forward to the next. Such was his enthusiasm for the outdoors.

Just before leaving for Nuwara Eliya on Thursday he collected a hand-held and mobile antenna and made some contacts while in Nuwara Eliya. He was on the air even on his last day.   He was on the phone with us just a few hours before he passed away and there was no hint at all as  to what was to follow.  We are still in shock and disbelief.

Back in the 1980s his homebrew Cubical Quad from Pita-Kotte was a landmark and most evenings he would work the long path to East Coast North America and we SWLs would listen to his great pile ups and operating skills. Come late evening the quad would turn to Europe and the pile ups would continue.  As an SWL I remember getting his newsletters and he was best known for his fantastic organisational skills during the German DARC conducted programme for South Asia here in Sri Lanka, as the dynamic secretary of the RSSL. Many owe their ham tickets to that programme.

It was on his 69th birthday that he passed away. The cremation takes place on Thursday the 20th at 5 PM at the General Cemetery Kanatta, Borella. Cortege leaves 206/1, Rajagiriya Road, Rajagiriya at 4 PM. The Radio Society of Sri Lanka has lost a great member who did much for the Society. We shall miss him very much. The RSSL Council of Management and Members extend their deepest sympathies to Upa and the children.  May he attain  Nibbana.

Messages may be sent to his home address above or phone: 0777557268
We request all members to assemble at the Cemetery before 5.PM.

Victor Goonetilleke 4S7VK
Hony. Secretary RSSL
